Omeprazole is the most generally used and doctors prescribe it frequently.

If you are using omeprazole for an extensive period of time, it limits the capability of the body to soak up vitamin B12. Using omeprazole for an extended period of time, can in time lead to:

  • Anemia
  • Damage to the central nervous system
  • Anxiety
  • Low levels of red blood cells can cause chronic fatigue
  • It causes loss of calcium in our bodies. When the levels of calcium in the body are low, it can lead to a brittle bone syndrome, also known as osteoporosis.
  • Muscle issues
  • Increased risk of respiratory issues like wheezing, congestion, hyperventilation etc.
  • It can lead to dementia and other degenerative ailments.
  • Depression
  • Reduces the number of red blood cells.

 

The Kaiser Permanente Institute which is located in the USA conducted a study in which they investigated the dangers that omeprazole poses to our health. Over 26 000 test subjects were observed every day. The subjects consumed diverse amounts of omeprazole within a two-year period.  As much as 65% of the test subjects that consumed omeprazole had a risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. When they compared the results with the subjects that didn’t take this drug, they concluded that the claims that were made about the dangerous nature of the drug were in fact true. Omeprazole shouldn’t be used as a gastric protector.
