A perpetual nail-biter died from this dreadful habit after he was advised numerous times by his doctor to stop.
John Gardener, 40, had a nail-biting trouble that was so big, that he contracted a septic infection that extends from his fingers to his body and became the reason of a heart attack.
Gardener’s doctors alleged that he would bite his nails until there was blood on his fingers. The fingers were injured from this habit, so damaged actually, that before he died, they were numb and he couldn’t feel anything at all.
Dr. Daniel Vernon, Gardener’s general physician alleged that his fingers and fingernails were at all times in poor condition, and they were frequently bleeding when he came to visit his doctor.
The trouble that Gardener had was probably fueled by anxiety and depression. On top of that, he was as well diabetic, which made him even more prone to different infections.
His bad habit became a medical crisis when one of his fingers was infected. The doctors originally treated him with intravenous antibiotics but then determined that they had to remove the tip of his finger.
After the surgery, John showed some improvement. But afterward, just several days after his 40thbirthday, he had a sudden heart attack. Doctors state that it was caused by the infection in his finger.
Chye Ng, an orthopedic surgeon stated that he and his team were surprised by Gardener’s death. John’s mother as well said that he was in disbelief when she heard the news that her son had died. She said that she was in a shock and that this whole situation is a tragedy. John’s family was hit very hard by his loss, and they wish that they did more to help him.
