Audra Tatum never thought twice about putting a foot up on the dashboard in the passenger seat. She was doing that when she was riding along on the highway or just down the street to get gas.

What she considered that was a playful posture became life-changing for her on Aug. 2, when she in a car accident with her husband driving near their home in Georgia.

 

Audra Tatum, a mother of three from Georgia, is warning against the dangers of putting your feet on the dashboard while in a moving car after suffering life-altering injuries in a crash.

They were going to pick up children when a car pulled out in front of them and they T-boned the other vehicle at a reasonable speed. At the time of the crash, she was wearing a seat belt and was sitting with crossed legs against the dashboard of her 2007 Ford Fusion.

The airbag opened, pushing her right foot into her face, thus breaking her right ankle, femur, shoulder and her nose. Her husband and had only minor injuries. The doctors told her that she would have been fine if she wasn’t sitting like that.

Audra Tatum, a mother of three from Georgia, is warning against the dangers of putting your feet on the dashboard while in a moving car after suffering life-altering injuries in a crash.

Tatum suffered extensive injuries that continue to affect her life two years after the crash, while her husband and daughter walked away without any problems.

“It’s has changed the rest of my life,” Tatum said.”For the rest of my life, I am limited. I am 33 years old that has a handicapped tag on my car.”

Tatum is sharing her and warning people against putting their feet on the dashboard.

Tatum suffered extensive injuries that continue to affect her life two years after the crash, while her husband and daughter walked away without any problems.

“I was telling her for years to stop doing it, for the reason that I knew something bad will happen if we ever have an accident,” her husband, Nick Tatum, 37, said. “It does not matter if you have your seat belt or you don’t. You will lunge forward, which makes your leg harder to pull back with all those G forces going forward. It is particularly dangerous.”

Tatum was recovering on her own without physical therapy since she didn’t have insurance to cover it. It took her one month to get on her feet and another 2 weeks with a walker. She is still in pain while standing or walking for a longer period of time.

Another easy to remember a way to identify melanoma is the ABCDE method.

Asymmetry: If the mole has an irregular shape
Border
: If the edges are faded, undefined, or messy
Color
: If it has multiple colors, there’s redness, or has bleeding or discharge
Diameter
: the mole is bigger than the diameter of an AAA battery
Evolving
: it changes in size, color, or shape
